I'll skip the meat of your post and comment on a throwaway issue:

The Alan Alda Republican (Vinick) won't win, though it'll be the primary aim of the show's writers for the next who knows how many episodes to create the impression that he might.

First off, West Wing is the Josh Lyman show and has been for some time. One could argue that Vinick can win and then hire Lyman in some senior-enough-to-appear-in-every-episode position, but even for a show that imagines Arnie Vinick and Matt Santos winning their respective parties nominations, this seems implausible.

Second, look at the billing. Alda is listed among the alphabetical crowd, and Smits is listed second-to-last with an "and..." credit along with Martin Sheen.

Writers can play any games they like, but billing is deadly serious business in Hollywood, and this means precisely what it says: Smits is the new Sheen.

No, Adam, you should lighten up and get a life. Rather than spending 20 hours of your week watching the blinking box, why don't you go out and talk to people and try to understand them?

By the way, the fact that you watch a lot of TV, and a lot of sci-fi, goes a long way in explaining why you have such a skewed, myopic view of the world around you.

So put down the Cheetos, pull up your pants, and go for a walk.
